Holter blood pressure monitoring
A Holter blood pressure test is a diagnostic procedure that allows for continuous measurement and monitoring of your blood pressure over a 24-hour period outside of a medical facility. This test provides your gynecologist with detailed information about how your blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day in various situations, offering more insight than a standard blood pressure measurement taken at a midwife or gynecologist’s office.
The Holter blood pressure test is particularly useful in the following cases:
Preeclampsia Screening: Measuring arterial blood pressure is crucial for assessing the risk of preeclampsia. Approximately 5% of pregnant women experience white coat syndrome, where blood pressure readings are elevated in a clinical setting but normal outside of it. Distinguishing between white coat syndrome and "true" hypertension is important for both maternal and fetal prognoses. Preeclampsia is more common in pregnant women with true hypertension, while those with white coat syndrome do not show an increased risk of preeclampsia.
Diagnosing high blood pressure: The purpose of this test is to provide a comprehensive overview of your blood pressure levels throughout the day, which is essential for either confirming or ruling out high blood pressure during pregnancy or preeclampsia, especially if prior readings have shown elevated levels.
Conducting the Study:
During the test, a midwife will attach a cuff to your upper arm similar to a regular blood pressure measurement. This cuff is connected to a device that can be discreetly secured to your shoulder or left side under your clothing. It is recommended to wear a loose blouse or sweater for comfort. The device will automatically measure your blood pressure at set intervals and store the data for later analysis. Once the device is installed, you can return home. At your follow-up appointment, the device will be connected to a computer, allowing your doctor to review and analyze your blood pressure readings. Afterward, you will receive the results in a printed report.
